Stars arrived to the red carpet of the 2021 Met Gala, NYC’s major fashion event that took place as it always does, at the world famous Metropolitan Museum of Art on the Upper East Side of Manhattan The Met Gala has done so almost every year since 1973. It’s cradled by Central Park, it has a comfortable, established feel to it’s location and celebrities including major pop stars, Hollywood A-listers, fashion icons, politicians and now a new wave of digital influencers arrived on 5th avenue and came dressed to celebrate and show their level of support for The Costume Institute, a fashion staple and a covid beacon in the world of the arts.
Last years’s Met Gala event was cancelled along with most major global fashion events. This was due to the COVID pandemic. After promising a return in 2021, The Gala was postponed again from it’s original Spring date of May to here in September, when the weather is beginning to cool and the leaves are beginning to finish their last dance before the change to Autumn in Central Park. This is the 2021 MET Gala and it finally came alive tonight bringing celebrities and some much needed fashion inspiration.
The theme of the Met Gala can be as important as the costumes themselves. It sets the tone and offers a platform for guests to express themselves. This year the theme for the 2021 Met Gala was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”. You found guests taking the theme of America and throwing their own spin on it and one celebrity even brought politics and money into it. But what I personally saw in AOC’s “Tax the Rich” dress is a symbol of how you can say what you want in America. You can write it on a dress and walk down a red carpet and to me this is a lexicon of American fashion. Freedom of speech.
“In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” is the first part of the two-part exhibition created by the Costume Institute. Part two is scheduled for opening on May 5, 2022 and it is planned to lead with a second Met Gala on the first Monday in May of 2022. It is called “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.”
Many pop star couples showed up to at this year’s Met Gala. This year with the pandemic most of these couples probably spent a lot of time together and you can see the confidence and trust these couples have created together in their walks on the Met Gala red carpet.
Justin and Hailey Bieber arrived at their first Met Gala together matching in black. Hayley Bieber wore Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello and Justin wore a Drew suit. Last time Justin walked the Met Gala red carpet was in 2015 and Hayley’s last time was 2017.
Camila wore a royal glitter gown of purple by Michael Kors with matching eyeshadow and Shawn Mendes was looking rockstar sexy in an open leather jacket.
Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were the last to walk the red carpet of the 2021 Met Gala, and as they did so an allure of royalty surrounded them. Rihanna has established herself as one, if not the world’s leading fashion mogul in recent years with the legendary Fenty Beauty. Transitioning from a global pop star of meteoric proportions to beauty mogul shows a certain strength to the woman. And A$AP Rocky, if he wants to show up in a quilt, he can do that too. Because he is A$AP Rocky. And together, they look complete.
There were certainly moments worth noting from those guests who walked the red carpet alone. Although not technically walking alone, it was all a mystery what was hiding behind the faceless costume of Kim Kardashian. And quickly online chatter began to spread around Kanye West accompanying Kim to the major event. Kanye was instrumental in Kim developing her relationship with Balenciaga Couture.
Meanwhile, Olivia Rodrigo arrived to her first ever Met Gala in black lace from Saint Laurent adorned with a feathered neckline. Other notable moments on the red carpet come when Ciara paid homage to her husband Russel Wilson (who was busy with MNF on ESPN and the Ravens / Raiders game). Kim Kardashian arrived with Demna Gvasalia of Balenciaga. Lorde donned a crown designed by BODGE Designer Emily Bode. AOC showed up in a dress that also caught media attention for her “Tax the Rich” dress.
