Remembering Joe Strummer

Happy birthday, dear Joe!
Joe Strummer the lead singer of The Clash, ‘the only band that really matters’ according to Lester Bangs, would have turned 67, today. Would have, as unfortunately, he left us way too early, when he was only 50, dying suddenly in a cold morning, on 22 December 2002, because of an undiagnosed congenital heart defect.

Born in Ankara, Turkey, on 21 August 1952, as John Graham Mellor, he started his musical career with the 101ers. In 1976 he joined The London SS that later on became The Clash.

What Joe left us is invaluable. His courage, his coherence,  his political activism, his music, his poetry still inspire and give strength to people all around the world.

After all these years Joe may be gone, but certainly not forgotten.

I am a filmmaker and a journalist based out of Berlin. I graduated from Vrije Universiteit Brussel. I have a passion for film, music, and Italian cuisine.
