It’s a big day for independent filmmakers, lovers of cinema and fans of the Sundance Film Festival as the Sundance Institute just announced some major details regarding the lineup of independent work selected for the 2022 Sundance Film Festival including the categories of the Indie Episodic, Feature Film, and New Frontier. We have big hitters like Netflix coming in with the Kanye West documentary, directorial debuts from Jesse Eisenberg and Eva Longoria, and 82 feature length films curated for a diverse audience in mind and representing 28 countries, with 39 of 92 (42%) feature film directors being first-time feature filmmakers.
The upcoming Sundance Film Festival opens on January 20th. This year, the Sundance Institute will prioritize biodigital design and the convergence of VR and reality to build off the success of last year’s virtual and satellite festival. The Sundance Institute will open the Festival with a presentation of Sam Green’s “32 Sounds” as part of the New Frontier program. Audiences will gather online and in person as the “32 Sounds” presentation will take place simultaneously in Park City’s Egyptian Theatre and in The Spaceship’s Cinema House.
32 Sounds / U.S.A. (Lead Artist: Sam Green) will have it’s World Premier on the opening night of the 2022 Sundance Film Festival will be presented in its “live cinema” form, featuring live music and live narration.. 32 Sounds is an immersive documentary and sensory film experience exploring the elemental phenomenon of sound and its power to bend time, cross borders, and profoundly shape our perception of the world around us.
“This year, we look forward to celebrating this generation’s most innovative storytellers as they share their work across a wide range of genres and forms,” said Sundance Institute founder and president Robert Redford. “These artists have provided a light through the darkest of times, and we look forward to welcoming their unique visions out into the world and experiencing them together.”
The Festival will take place both in-person in Park City, Salt Lake City and the Sundance Mountain Resort in Utah. All in-person attendees are required to be fully vaccinated and wear masks.
Following the presentation a slate of carefully curated Day One films will open the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. This will include eleven features and a strong shorts program illustrating the Sundance Institute’s dedication to a vast scope of genre and formats.
Eight feature films have been selected by the Sundance Institute for the Festival’s seven satellite screens. The independent arthouse cinemas are the Amherst Cinema in Amherst, Massachusetts; a/perture cinema in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Digital Gym Cinema in San Diego, California; Indie Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee; mama.film in Lawrence, Kansas; Northwest Film Forum in Seattle, Washington; and SNF Parkway Theatre, home of the Maryland Film Festival in Baltimore, Maryland.
